學校歷史背景:
南安普敦大學歷史追溯到1862年，當時一位酒商家族的繼承人亨利·羅賓遜·哈特利，將遺產留給南安普敦公司，以投資辦學和科學研究，就這樣在當年的十月成立了哈特利學院。
哈特利學院一開始的學生幾乎多是半工半讀或是夜校生，儘管規模不大，到了20世紀已經成為家喻戶曉中的好學校。在1902年學院升格為大學學院，並在短短的三十年獲取國家資助，盡心投入化學及工程領域研究的發展。
哈特利大學學院在1952年更名為南安普敦大學，隨著1950 年代學生人數快速增長，除了海菲爾德校區擴張外，學校也開始在其它領域投入心力、力求創新，南安普敦大學是世界上最早設立電子系的大學之一，也是最早將科技運用上教育學習，開設線上課程的學校之一。
現今南安普敦大學已經是世界一流的大學，學生總人數超越20,000人，於2011年在馬來西亞設置新校區。

Undergraduate Foundation Programme (UFP)大學預科課程（完成後接大一）
針對國際學生，On Campus Southampton提供大學預科(UFP)，課程幫助學生打穩英文以及預計就讀科系的知識基礎，課程長度大約一年，每周上課約21小時，英文底子需要加強的學生，能夠先單上英文課程在接上預科課程。
Oncampus課程旨在幫助已完成高中教育的國際學生為進入南安普頓大學的本科學習做好準備。對於跨科系或是大學GPA較低的大學生，也能透過碩士預科(MFP)將自己準備好，同大學預科，一樣有英文和專業領域的課程，碩士預科每周上課約18-23小時，期末成績達到標準就能直升碩士正式課程。
