學校歷史背景：
馬來亞大學(UM)是馬來西亞最古老的大學，位於馬來西亞首都吉隆坡西南部，它於1905年9月28日在新加坡成立，當時命名為愛德華七世醫學院(King Edward VII College of Medicine)，在1949年與萊佛士學院(Raffles College)合併後以地緣命名，成為University of Malaya，馬來亞(Malaya)是當時馬來西亞聯邦西部土地的稱呼。
大學在成立後的十年發展十分迅速，1959年成立兩個校區，一個位於新加坡，另一個位在吉隆坡，到了1961年馬國聯邦政府通過立法將兩所大學分離，自此1962年開始兩校獨立經營，吉隆坡校區保留原本University of Malaya校名，成為國立大學，同年6月16日慶祝首任校長Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj就職，他也是馬來西亞第一任首相。

吉隆坡為馬來西亞之首都，位於馬來西亞半島中西部，它是該國最大的城市、商業中心及交通系統的樞紐，人口密集度高。整座城市融合了現代與傳統建築風格，像是摩天樓、清真寺、華人店舖（樓下經營商店，樓上為住家）及高蹺屋（馬來人村落建築）。雖然巴生(Kelang)沿岸非常擁堵，但其市政區與郊區規劃良好，吉隆坡市中心的金三角區覆蓋中央商務區、娛樂場所和購物中心，在高樓大廈之中，有兩座世界最高的建築，分別是國油雙峰塔(452米)及吉隆坡電訊塔(421米)，政府大樓與知名、摩爾式設計風格的老火車站位於河畔西岸，這個核心區周圍是混合住宅區，環繞現代平房及中等收入家庭所住的磚房，Bukit Tunku被視為是吉隆坡的上流社會居住區，好比是豪華公寓及別墅的展示場。
馬來人是穆斯林，是吉隆坡最大的族群，許多馬來人受雇於政府部門，儘管如此，華人卻主導這座城市的經濟，在今天大概沒有人會相信它在1850年代是一座唯有中國勞工居住的地方，由於採礦業的成功，吉隆坡在1896年升格為馬國首都，吸引馬來人、華人、印度人和英國殖民地居民移居過來，使之人口結構呈現多樣性，成為一個特色。近年來，吉隆坡與巴生就業機會吸引了其他東南亞國家的居民，同時也有西方國家的投資者，英文在該國是業界和教育重要的語言，吉隆坡有多間為外國居民設置的社會協會和學校，對國際學生來說，馬來西亞就學是一個經濟實惠的選擇，與全球其它國家相比擁有相對上付擔得起的大學學費和生活開銷。
