學校概況：
馬來西亞理科大學(USM)提供多樣化的學科課程，領域涵蓋自然科學、醫學、建築學、藝術、人文及教育，大學除了有三個校區外，還擁有17個研究中心，致力於考古學、政策研討和國際研究等。
馬來西亞理科大學不倚賴傳統大學體系，它有一套自己的系統，特色是保有正課和課外活動學習上的平衡，校方相信這可以給予學生更全面的體驗，培養學生不同領域的技能，增進畢業後的競爭力。該大學倡導全民教育的重要性，於1971年創立School of Distance Learning，針對在職人士彈性修課的需求，提供藝術、科學、社會科學和管理學的線上學位課程，另外，學校執行的 ‘Bottom 40% Households’ 計劃也特別關照到弱勢家庭的學子，在減輕經濟壓力的情況下，確保學生能專注於學習上。
學生福利是馬來西亞理科大學重視的一環，在校學生享有服務包括課業與人生規劃的諮詢，多數學生住在大學城生活圈，那裡就像一個學生村一樣，有公寓或是平價的青年旅社能選擇，以及體育設施及國際比賽規模的游泳池。在校園內，馬來西亞理科大學也有多個場地（場館），學生能進行無論是射箭、板球、足球、羽毛球、網球、曲棍球、橄欖球、壘球、壁球和籃球等，其場地曾在2008年用於舉辦U/19板球世界杯。大學還有自己的爵士樂隊，由各學院的音樂菁英所組成。
學校歷史背景：
馬來西亞理科大學是馬來西亞第二所國立大學，歷史追溯到1959年，當時由D. S. Ramanathan在州會議提出建校想法，後來在新港（座落在檳城的東南部區）收購一塊土地後，於1969年正式建立學校，命名為檳城大學(Universiti Pulau Pinang)，最初學校還需要借用馬來西亞教師培訓學的校舍，第一屆招收到57名理科生。
到了1971年，馬來西亞理科大學將校地遷移到檳城州的牛汝莪，佔地239公頃，成為該大學的主校區，另外兩個校區分別是在高淵的工學院分校以及在吉蘭丹古的醫學院分校。馬來西亞理科大學採用非傳統的學校系統，讓學生能夠更多元化的學習，提高接觸不同領域的學習機會，並鼓勵學生參與課外活動，作為2007年馬來西亞高等教育部認可的研究型大學，校方更積極於推動師生教學與研究計劃，並在2008年間成為第一所加入卓越計畫(Accelerated Programme for Excellence)的大學。

馬來西亞理科大學(USM)的主校區位於檳城州牛汝莪。
馬來西亞是由十三個州與三的聯邦直轄區所組成，檳城是馬來西亞半島西海岸的一個島嶼，雖然是全國第二小的聯邦州，但它卻是人口密集度最高的州，其中有43%是馬來人，41%是華人。檳城有著悠久的歷史和美食，該州的首府為喬治市，牛汝莪位在喬治市的市郊，位於檳威大橋旁，距離喬治市市中心約六公里車程。
牛汝莪(Gelugor)是以亞參果(馬來文: asam gelugor)命名，它是在馬來半島廣泛能見的一種植物。在18世紀末該地區主要為漁民居住，隨後被為整治為農業區，到了1960年，隨著鄰近大城市喬治市的發展，也開始都市化，1969年，馬來西亞理科大學在此成立，現在是馬來西亞頂尖的公立大學之一。
牛汝莪海岸有一座發電廠，是由東南亞最大的上市電力公司 “馬來西亞國家能源公司 - Tenaga Nasional” 所營運，該地區未來規劃能打造成The Light City，成一個商業與住宅混合區，包括建造購物中心、豪華酒店及更多住宅建案。
